What Is a Literary Salon?

A literary salon is a time-honored cultural tradition—originating in intellectual circles where writers, thinkers, artists, and patrons gathered to exchange ideas, present works, and engage in meaningful discourse. Historically, salons have served as: Incubators of thought Platforms for emerging and established voices spaces where literature, culture, and society intersect The Black Authors Festival Literary Salon reimagines this tradition through a contemporary lens—centering Black voices, stories, and intellectual contributions within an elevated and intentionally curated environment.

The Literary Salon Experience

The Literary Salon is an exclusive, curated enclave designed to convene: Authors Intellectuals Cultural leaders Discerning readers within an intimate, refined setting, literature is not simply presented, it is experienced. Participants will:• Present and showcase their literary works
• Engage in thoughtful, elevated dialogue
• Share the inspiration, purpose, and message behind their work
• Participate in curated speaking moments within designated Salon sessions. Each author may feature up to two (2) literary works, offering a deeper expression of their voice and contribution.

Two Distinguished Salon Locations

Sag Harbor Literary Salon

Hosted by Ruth Allman Set within the culturally rich and historic landscape of Sag Harbor, this Salon is hosted by distinguished author and festival honoree Ruth Allman. This experience is intentionally designed to foster: Intellectual exchange Cultural dialogue Literary excellence at the highest level Ruth Allman will formally introduce each author, ensuring a polished, distinguished, and cohesive Salon experience.

Atlanta Literary Salon (ATL)

Host To Be Announced - The Atlanta Salon will deliver the same elevated and curated experience within a dynamic cultural setting. While a host will be announced, the structure and integrity of the Salon remain consistent: Curated presentations Structured dialogue Elevated audience engagement Intentional literary positioning

Important Application Requirement

Applicants must indicate clearly which Salon they are applying for:

Sag Harbor (Hosted by Ruth Allman)
Atlanta (Host to be announced)Applications will be reviewed and curated per location.

Who May Apply

The Literary Salon welcomes published authors across all genres, including: Emerging voices Established authors We strongly encourage new authors to participate, as the Salon offers a rare opportunity to:

• Gain visibility within a sophisticated literary audience
• Engage directly with readers and fellow authors
• Position their work within a respected cultural platform

Submission Guidelines

• One submission per genre, per author
• Duplicate submissions will be disqualified
• Each submission must include the required fee
• Authors must be present to participate

Assistant Access

Authors requiring assistance must register an assistant:

• Assistant Fee: $175
• Must be registered at the time of author submission

Materials Policy

All submitted materials (books, images, etc.) become the property of the Black Authors Festival and will not be returned.

Travel & Accommodations

All participating authors are responsible for securing their own:

• Travel
• Flights
• Lodging
